How to move crypto from Coinbase to a cold wallet safely
Two mistakes are permanent: a swapped address and the wrong network. Coinbase's send steps, joined to the on-device check Trezor and Ledger document.
To move crypto from Coinbase to a cold wallet, open Receive on your hardware wallet’s account for the network you will use, paste that address into Coinbase’s send form on the same network, and confirm the pasted address against the device’s own screen. Send a small amount first, check it arrives, then send the rest.
An evergreen guide: this desk read the three vendor pages linked below on 18 October 2026, menu labels included.
What can go wrong on the way to a cold wallet?
Two mistakes, both permanent. Coinbase’s send page says on-chain sends are irreversible and it cannot retrieve funds sent to the wrong address or network.
The first is a swapped address. Trezor’s receive guide says malware on a computer or phone can swap the address before or after you copy it; the device shows it independently on its own screen, so comparing catches the swap.
The second is the wrong network. The sources word it differently: Coinbase says funds will be lost, Trezor that they can be lost, and Ledger’s article that assets could end up not visible in your Ledger Wallet accounts.
How to move crypto from Coinbase to a cold wallet, in order
- Start from a device checked as genuine and a verified companion app. Ledger’s app is now Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live.
- Open Receive on the account for the network you will send on. In Trezor Suite each account is one network, and tokens use their account’s address.
- On Coinbase.com, choose Send crypto, the asset and amount, then To and a supported network. The app starts from the Pay tab. Coinbase says to confirm the receiving wallet supports that network.
- Paste the address, then compare it with the device screen before Preview Send. Trezor: click Verify. Ledger: Verify, approve on the Secure Screen, and Re-verify after pasting.
- Send a small amount first. Ledger’s tip: confirm it arrived before sending more.
- Send the rest. Bitcoin accounts hand out a new address each time, so verify on the device again.
Our Ledger review covers the device itself.

Common questions
Does it cost money to move my crypto from Coinbase to a wallet?
Yes, in network fees. Coinbase’s send page says on-chain sends incur network fees and take time to process. It gives no figure, so review the details on the Preview Send screen before confirming. Sends to another Coinbase user by email or phone are off-chain and carry no transaction fees.
Why is Coinbase not letting me send my crypto to another wallet?
Coinbase’s page names three things. Sends may be temporarily capped, and the cap lifts automatically. Sends are subject to your transfer protection settings. Certain higher-valued sends prompt for two-factor authentication. Otherwise, contact Coinbase through its own help centre, never anyone who messaged you first.
How do I transfer my crypto from Coinbase to an external wallet?
On Coinbase.com, choose Send crypto, the asset and amount, then To and a supported network. Add the address, then Preview Send and Send now; the app starts from the Pay tab. For a hardware wallet, take the address from the device’s Receive screen and check it there before sending.
Crypto assets are high risk, and nothing here is financial advice. Self-custody means the checks are yours: read your vendor’s receive guide before the first send.
