To check if your Trezor is genuine, confirm the holographic seal is intact, the backup cards are blank and no firmware is installed. Then let Trezor Suite install signed firmware and, on the Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7, run the Secure Element check. If any step fails, stop.

An evergreen guide: this desk read Trezor’s five model guides and its authentication check page on 3 October 2026. The last column is our reading.

What changed on the Safe 7 in May 2026?

Trezor’s authentication check page says the May 2026 updates added post-quantum support: the check now also verifies an ML-DSA-44 signature from the MCU.

What if a check fails?

Do not set it up. Contact Trezor support from trezor.io, never an email link (why), and verify the Suite download too. If you have already typed your backup words into a website or app, start here.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a way to test if your Trezor is genuine?

Yes. Check the seal, check the backup cards are blank, and confirm setup finds no firmware installed. Then let Trezor Suite install signed firmware. On the Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7, Suite also sends a challenge that the Secure Element signs and returns with a factory-issued certificate.

Can you check if a device is genuine by its serial number?

No. Trezor says its devices have no serial numbers, as a security measure. The number on the box is a packaging serial, used to identify packaging batches if there is a packaging error. It says nothing about whether the device inside is genuine.

What should I do if a Trezor authenticity check fails?

Stop. Do not create a wallet on the device, restore a backup onto it or send funds to it. Contact Trezor support from trezor.io directly. Its guides give the same instruction for a damaged seal, pre-filled backup cards or firmware found at setup.
